Dr. Sandi Scheinbaum

Dr.SandiScheinbaumPh.D.

Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience, specializing in holistic approaches to mental and physical well-being.

Dr. Scheinbaum graduated from the Fielding Institute and Northwestern University. As a Senior Fellow in Biofeedback from the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, she is a nationally-recognized expert in the field, having presented at national and international conferences, lectured extensively to the general public, taught doctoral-level courses on biofeedback and conducted several research studies, including a controlled study of neurofeedback for ADD and a study of migraine headaches and depression. In addition, Dr. Scheinbaum developed a relaxation tape for children and produced a CD for patients with multiple sclerosis to ease the discomfort of self-administered intramuscular injections. The CD, used by the pharmaceutical company, Biogen, emphasized breathing techniques and hypnotic guided imagery.

Dr. Scheinbaum studied with Dr. Andrew Weil at the Center for Integrative Medicine, with a specialization in Nutrition and Cancer. She also completed a teacher training program in yoga at the Chicago Yoga Center.

In addition to obtaining a doctorate in clinical psychology, Dr. Scheinbaum has a masters degree in learning disabilities and held teaching certificates in elementary education, early childhood education, learning disabilities and behavior disorders. She taught graduate level courses in special education at National-Lewis University and served as the Director of Clinical Training for practicum students in special education.

As an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit disorders, Dr. Scheinbaum founded the Institute for Attention Deficit Disorders, which introduced neurofeedback training to the Chicago area in the early 1990's. The local affiliates of ABC News and NBC News aired feature segments about the work of Dr. Scheinbaum and the Institute for ADD. She was a panel member on a local television talk show about adults with ADD and has been interviewed by several nationally-syndicated radio talk stations about a variety of topics.

The nonpharmacological treatment of anxiety and panic disorders is also a special interest of Dr. Scheinbaum. She uses a uniques combination of biofeedback-assisted relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavior therapy, and nutritional supplements. In her private practice, Dr. Scheinbaum has helped hundreds of clients achieve a state in inner quiet and break free from an anxiety-ridden state. Many of these individuals have been able to withdraw from anti-anxiety medications.

Working with the late Sherry Pfeffer Byer, Ph.D., she brought the Panic/Anxiety/Recovery Center to Northbrook, Illinois. The Center developed group programs for panic reduction, conducted free screening programs for anxiety at Highland Park Hospital as part of the National Anxiety Screening Day, and sponsored community lectures about panic and anxiety.

A member of the Medical Staff of Rush North Shore Medical Center since 1986, Dr. Scheinbaum provides inpatient consultations in health psychology, with an emphasis on relaxation techniques and positive guided imagery. She currently serves as President of the Women's Board of Rush North Shore and is a member of the Board of Trustees and the Institutional Review Board. Dr. Scheinbaum has been a featured speaker for numerous hospital-based community education programs, lecturing on a variety of topics ranging from stress reduction to the management of PMS. In the fall of 2008, she will be presenting a workshop on nutrition and cancer to the nursing staff.
